Careers in the Arts Fair is an opportunity for scholars, and other students throughout NYC, to meet professional artists that are working in various fields of art and design. Presented as part of the Art Future NYC collective, artists and designers of color gathered at the New School to present rich presentations on their creative practices and their pathways. Scholars had a unique opportunity to see the multitude of ways that people make their careers as creative people.
Participating Artists:
Joiri Minaya Maria de Los Angeles Jeannette Rodriguez Pineda PJ Gubatina Policarpio Hannah Assebe Dom Crockett Quilian Riano Carly Ann Fergus Coco Cafe Tiana Marenah Datrianna Meeks Jacob Hernandez Laura James Chat Travieso Sabrina Hall Rontherin Ratliff Naomi Guerrero
We asked the artists what advice they’d give to young folks, and here’s what some of them had to say:
“Be critical of the world around you and push yourself to grow not only as a student/artist, but also as a human.” -Chat Travieso
“Reach out to people who are doing the thing you want to be doing. While some people may not have time, many will and would be happy to advise you on how to pursue the craft you want.” -Datrianna Meeks
“Creativity is not exclusive to the Arts, it is a muscle we must exercise daily.” -Jeannette Rodriguez Pineda
“Trust yourself!! Follow your passions and pursue it with rigor, unapologetically. Practice self-care & preservation.” -PJ Gubatina Policarpio
“Honing in on your passion is an important journey that is unique to each and every person. On that path, open yourself up to information around you, whether that’s from mentors, teachers, peers / family, or day-to-day observations.” -Jacob Hernandez
