Youth Advocates

Close mentorship model

Youth Advocates are dedicated educators who build lasting relationships with the same group of scholars for 2.5 years, offering continuity and personalized attention. They deliver art education that highlights artists of color and integrates themes of community and social justice, ensuring that students engage with meaningful and relevant content. Beyond the classroom, Youth Advocates lead dynamic workshops, events, and trips, creating enriching experiences that extend learning beyond traditional settings. They also provide crucial social-emotional support, helping scholars navigate personal and academic challenges. Additionally, they play a vital role in guiding students through the postsecondary planning process, offering support and resources to help them achieve their future goals.

“Remember that your art is not merely a form of self-expression but a catalyst for empathy, understanding, and unity.”

Youth Advocate Counselor

The Youth Advocate Counselor (YAC) plays a crucial role in supporting scholars by focusing on their social-emotional learning and overall wellbeing. They provide guidance throughout the postsecondary planning process, ensuring that students have the resources and support they need to make informed decisions about their future. The YAC connects scholars with essential resources both within and outside the university, addressing a wide range of issues including immigration, health and wellness (both physical and mental), food insecurity, and housing insecurity. Additionally, they extend similar support to members of the Parsons Scholars mentor fellowship, fostering a comprehensive network of assistance and care for all involved.
