Yelaine has just finished her final semester in the BFA Fashion Design program. She enjoys being around other art students, and believes “we can all get positive energy from each other”. She has studied abroad at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, and spent a summer studying at Parsons Paris, after receiving a scholarship to attend. After proving her capabilities as a Teaching Assistant in the pre-college class of designer Jillian Lewis (formerly of Project Runway), Yelaine was recruited for an internship at Ralph Lauren, and later interned for Oscar de la Renta. She hopes to establish her own line of clothes, and would like to be able to “join forces with the factories in […]
Yelaine completed her BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons in Fall 2012. As a Parsons Scholar, she was passionate about pursuing a future in fine art, and she explored this interest through courses in drawing, painting, and animation, among others. However, after she was exposed to fashion-related projects as a Parsons freshman, she chose to major in fashion. Throughout her years at Parsons, Yelaine worked as a mentor for the Parsons Scholars Program, regularly providing individual tutoring for students with fashion interests. As a teaching assistant for the Pre-College Academy, which provides the overarching framework for scholars’ classes, Yelaine developed an extremely productive relationship with the instructor Jillian Lewis (Project Runway finalist from Season 4), which led to an internship […]
On NPD I showed my portfolio to several art and design colleges and got much feedback. My portfolio consisted of several illustrated pieces and much more mixed media art work like print-making and charcoal self portraits. The first school I went to was Pratt. They told me I should work on more large scales because my large self-portrait was great and that I should work with charcoal more because my contrast is pretty good. Parsons told me I was an illustrator and told me to work with more colors. Otis College of Art and Design recommended that I work on more large scales because I am very good with it and my design is pretty amazing. Overall I learned […]
On Saturday the Seniors had a portfolio workshop and set up the lights and cameras to photograph their great work. The Scholars published their photos on an online portfolio, so watch out for their work!
November 11, 2012 In preparation for National Portfolio Day, the Scholars brought in their portfolios full of amazing work done in the program, in school and on their own. We critiqued everyone’s work, and talked about how to prepare for Portfolio reviews when applying to college. Go-Pro day was a day when we critiqued everyone’s work and prepared for National Portfolio day. Part of the critiques were: how to take better care of your work, how to present your work and yourself, etc. Even though everybody took turns critiquing everybody else, everyone noticed everyone’s talents. Being able to critique the work of my peers and have my work being critiqued gave me a chance to realize that not everybody sees […]
On October 6th, 2012, Parsons Scholars’ students went to a college vocab workshop. In the beginning of the workshop, we made a list on our needs and wants for colleges/ universities. Many of us, did not now some of the college words/ terms such as the SEEK program, HEOP, EOP, and many others. It was a long, but worth a while time to learn things we didn’t know. It was a great experience learning other vocabs because I feel learning about these helps you become more prepared and ready for colleges/ universities applications. Overall, I thought this workshop was good, I learned many things about the application process from my mentors and peers. ~Stephanie Li […]

October 27, 2012 Photographers Devon Morgan, Chris Miller and Lucia Rojas joined us to share their work and their experiences as freelance photographers and videographers in the worlds of fashion, documentary and skateboarding. Then, the Scholars paired off with the photographers and mentors to do a workshop based on photography and youth representation. Three spectacular photographers and videographers, Devon Morgan, Lucia Rojas and Chris Miller presented their work. Devon Morgan is a freelance photographer that focuses on urban photography such as modeling, fashion and catalog photography. Morgan showed us most of his photography work as well as the catalog shoots he’s done for very famous companies. He describes that the process was very hectic but it’s worth the price if […]
We went to the incredible architecture firm, Diller, Scofidio and Renfro where Junior Architect Kumar Atre showed us the legacy of the firm’s work, and discussed what it’s like to work for a company like this. Then, Jac Mautner gave us a tour of the model shop, and a tour of one of the firm’s flagship projects- the Highline! The Highline has been a spot of great historical importance and artistic inspiration for some of us Scholars. However to meet the architecture firm that designed and oversaw the construction of this marvelous landmark is priceless. Located in the melting pot of Chelsea, the firm’s offices were aligned desks with cluttered papers of plans and ideas. Beautifully made models were scattered throughout the room. There we […]
We started this afternoon by inviting parents and families to join us for lunch and an informal mixer. Together, we worked on a symbolic self-portrait project and shared it with the group.
We met at the Cooper Hewitt Teen Design Fair, where high-school students can meet professional designers and have intimate conversations with them about their careers and insights. Scholars were particularly excited about meeting Tim Gunn, Miss Jay from America’s Next Top Model, and Christopher Bevans of Billionaire Boys Clubs.
October 13, 2012 This afternoon, we met as a group to discuss the importance of digital literacy. We talked about how to select a professional email address, opened up Gmail accounts, and learned how to use Google Drive as a collaboration tool. Then, we spent most of the session learning how to navigate College Board’s college search option. By using the information Nadia shared with us the week before, we created a list of schools that met both our needs and wants, and began to explore college websites. Now each of us has a starting list of schools we intend to apply to.
This past Saturday both the Senior and Junior scholars started preparing for the college application process. The Seniors were introduced to their college mentors, and also started the college research process. By navigating their way through the college websites of their choice, the scholars where able to find out the deadlines for admissions departments and also financial aid information. By starting now the Senior scholars will hit the ground running once they start filling out the applications for the schools of their choice. Good luck to all the scholars that took their SAT’s on Saturday. I hope you all did well! On Saturday the Juniors were introduced to the college jargon. Learning this will help the scholars understand the application process in their […]
The Mentors are hard at work gearing up for a new exciting semester in the Parsons Scholars Program. We’re all excited to get started next Saturday (Sept. 29), and we have a great team of dedicated undergraduates to support the Scholars with their great ideas, visions and expertise. Thanks to all of the Mentors for your continued commitment!
On Friday, August 10th, Parsons Scholars Program celebrated the accomplishments and lessons learned by the newest class of Scholars. Before entering their junior year of high school, this dedicated group explored their areas of interest during all-day studio classes for two weeks in August in the Pre-College Summer Academy at Parsons in classes such as Digital Video & Photography, Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting & Drawing, Architecture, Accessory Design and Printmaking. In addition to making friends from across the country as well as across the globe, the Scholars explored the city during class field trips and were given a taste of a fast-paced college environment with time-consuming homework assignments. The photos below are evidence of their growth and commitment. […]

Last night on August 2, 2012 we celebrated the graduation of 13 Scholars from our program. We had a great time celebrating their hard work, as well as that of Stacy, their devoted and tireless coordinator. They might be leaving the program and we won’t see them every Saturday morning anymore but, as we all know, once a Scholars, always a Scholar! The scholars line up for the paper airplane throw, a new tradition! After the ceremony, the seniors make time to pose and get silly, as expected. Our wonderful, down-to-earth, talented speaker, Jordan Isip Stacy reminisces about her time with her Scholars.
Summer has been a whirlwind of happenings at the Parsons Scholars Program this year. As recipients of the Anna Toonk Scholarship, Parsons Scholars Raquel Castillo, Roxana Santana and Andy Bell-Baltaci and Alumni Francisco Vivar, Richard Pean and Paul Gomez, traveled to Paris where they spent 4 weeks taking intensive art and design classes and exploring France. Take a look at photos of a few of their adventures in previous posts. Back in NY, rising senior Scholars continued to prove their commitment to their goals through the rigorous coursework of the Summer Intensive Studies program. During this college credit course, some students confirmed their future college majors, while others were relieved to have the opportunity to narrow down their options before entering […]

Having fun in Paris, 2 first weeks visiting the city, learning some french and making new friends along the way.
On Friday the 13th (Ooooh! Spooooky!) we took an hour or so to unwind! The coordinators, rising seniors, and a few mentors enjoyed a lunch together and chatted about the week, apricots, and hair.
The Emoti-Con event was held at Parsons on June 2, where NYC youth showcased digital technology creations and engaged in conversations about the role of technology. Our senior scholars participated with the submission of their Beyond Bullets PSAs, the juniors presented their short horror flicks, and the sophomore scholars joined in the activities hosted by Emoti-Con to support the juniors and seniors, and to start generating ideas for next year. Guest speakers presented their work, spoke about their careers in relevant industries and shared their learning experiences as artists, designers and inventors. More info about the day can be found here. Scholars enjoying their lunches, Emoti-Con t-shirts and gift bags! Lessons learned… Poster, logo, t-shirt designed by our own Parsons undergrad […]
On Saturday, May 12, 2012, Parsons Scholars celebrated the opening of their Festival Exhibition! Many thanks to sophomore and junior scholars who volunteered (while seniors were in class) and faculty and staff who hung each piece in preparations for the show! Senior scholars first presented the PSA’s they created with faculty Shola Ajayi, which were films educating teenagers about gun violence, created in response to their Senior Capstone Project. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session from peers and guests. Family, friends and peers saw the selected works made by students, which were distributed throughout the 12th floor of the 6 East 16th street building, including a project submission dedicated to the Trayvon Martin case, seen below. Congratulations to the […]
Finally… presenting the two public service announcements created by the class of 2012 in the Parsons Scholars Program! These short films were created after the seniors decided they wanted to do more to spread an anti-gun violence message to their peers during their graphic design collaboration with Beyond Bullets for this year’s senior capstone project . Big thanks to Beyond Bullets for posting about the Scholars’ collaboration on their blog and to Shola Ajayi for her expertise and guidance throughout the filmmaking process. Spread the message! REWIND WHAT WOULD YOU DO? And last but not least, the outtakes to prove all of the hard work that went into creating these serious shots! For more of the behind-the-scenes, check out more of the […]
These three short horror films were made by Parsons Scholars juniors during a festive filmmaking workshop led by Shola Ajayi over the Halloween weekend last fall. After the Scholars learned how to use HD video cameras, they worked in groups to create plots and storyboards and filmed around the Parsons campus in under 30 minutes. They then learned how to edit their films using iMovie and Adobe After Effects. Watch if you dare! For more videos created by other Parsons Scholars, visit our Vimeo page at: www.vimeo.com/parsonsscholars
On Saturday, April 21st, Parsons Scholars celebrated their accomplishments this semester in the program-wide Pre-College Academy Open Studio. We were fortunate to have alumni visitors, who always warm our hearts and share insight with current Scholars. The cake– made by Youth Advocate Tanya– was much-appreciated after a long semester! Congrats to all on an incredible semester. We’re proud of all of you!
Big congrats to Junior Scholars Naiky Paradis and Andrew Rhee who were both selected to have artwork displayed in the Brooklyn Artists Gym’s “Past Present & Future” exhibition! Check out their work, which currently on display through May 14th. More info on the flyer below. Keep up the great work, Scholars!!!
The Juniors Visit Colleges! During Spring Break week the Juniors took time to visit SVA, Pratt, and FIT! Here are some of the pictures from their visit to Pratt!
