Pre-College Summer Academy

On Friday, August 10th, Parsons Scholars Program celebrated the accomplishments and lessons learned by the newest class of Scholars.  Before entering their junior year of high school, this dedicated group explored their areas of interest during all-day studio classes for two weeks in August in the Pre-College Summer Academy at Parsons in classes such as Digital Video & Photography, Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting & Drawing, Architecture, Accessory Design and Printmaking. Scholars Class of 2012

Last night on August 2, 2012 we celebrated the graduation of 13 Scholars from our program. We had a great time celebrating their hard work, as well as that of Stacy, their devoted and tireless coordinator. They might be leaving the program and we won’t see them every Saturday morning anymore but, as we all know, once a Scholars, always a Scholar! The scholars line up for the paper airplane throw, a new tradition!     After the ceremony, the seniors make time to pose and get silly, as expected.     Our wonderful, down-to-earth, talented speaker, Jordan Isip       Stacy reminisces about her time with her Scholars.

Parsons Scholars Festival Exhibition recap!

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, Parsons Scholars celebrated the opening of their Festival Exhibition! Many thanks to sophomore and junior scholars who volunteered (while seniors were in class) and faculty and staff who hung each piece in preparations for the show! Senior scholars first presented the PSA’s they created with faculty Shola Ajayi, which were films educating teenagers about gun violence, created in response to their Senior Capstone Project. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session from peers and guests. Family, friends and peers saw the selected works made by students, which were distributed throughout the 12th floor of the 6 East 16th street building, including a project submission dedicated to the Trayvon Martin case, seen below. Congratulations to the […]

Beyond Bullets PSA’s

Finally… presenting the two public service announcements created by the class of 2012 in the Parsons Scholars Program! These short films were created after the seniors decided they wanted to do more to spread an anti-gun violence message to their peers during their graphic design collaboration with Beyond Bullets for this year’s senior capstone project .  Big thanks to Beyond Bullets for posting about the Scholars’ collaboration on their blog and to Shola Ajayi for her expertise and guidance throughout the filmmaking process.  Spread the message! REWIND   WHAT WOULD YOU DO? And last but not least, the outtakes to prove all of the hard work that went into creating these serious shots! For more of the behind-the-scenes, check out more of the […]

Horror Flicks!

These three short horror films were made by Parsons Scholars juniors during a festive filmmaking workshop led by Shola Ajayi over the Halloween weekend last fall.  After the Scholars learned how to use HD video cameras, they worked in groups to create plots and storyboards and filmed around the Parsons campus in under 30 minutes. They then learned how to edit their films using iMovie and Adobe After Effects.   Watch if you dare! Senior Scholars Featured on the Beyond Bullets Webpage

The Parsons Scholar Senior Beyond Bullets Design Team was featured on the Beyond Bullets homepage! We’re so happy to see their hard work is being recognized. Keep up the awesome work, scholars! “These young designers hit the ground running. Our initial meeting was meant to be a basic introduction, but the students wasted no time. They started brainstorming instantly. We discussed gun violence, gun access, poverty and peer pressure. They started thinking about how to reach their peers with a message of non-violence. They’ve been researching effective campaigns and studying the issue from every angle.” (via Beyond Bullets) Check it out here!

Fountain Art Fair

On March 10, the sophomore scholars went on a fieldtrip to the Fountain Art Fair where they were able to see different kinds of art-making, which they were excited to learn about and looked forward to trying. Below are some of their experiences and reactions to this day. Abigail Carrillo Here in the Fountain Arts Fair, I seriously was about to scream like a little girl and run around in order to see everything. However, being the responsible teenager I am, I kept in my inner geek and calmly observed and talked to the artists. I was very impressed, for their chosen media seemed hard to control. Their work inspired me to become greater and better in mastering and understanding […]

The Museum of the Moving Image

On March 3rd, the Sophomore Scholars went on a trip to visit The Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. They really enjoyed the museum, as noted in their reflections below. Stephanie Li:             The Museum of the Moving Image was amazing. I enjoyed most of their animation work but only one caught my attention. The animation that got my interest was the oscilloscope. It spun and spun and spun. It went from the liquid-like thing, came out from the drain, then turned into a blimp, then broke down through fingers, then though and envelope and finally the envelope folded and fell into the trash. At first I asked myself whether it was real or fake but it turns out […]

Scholars visit Time Magazine’s Photo Desk

On Friday afternoon, a group of both Sophomore and Junior Scholars visited the Photo Desk of Time Magazine with Pete Pin.  We discussed different kinds of photography, the role of photography in print media, as well as types of careers in photography and their conditions.  Pete introduced concepts around mainstream media and marketing, the transition from print to internet based media, and raised moral and ethical questions for the Scholars to begin thinking about. Today’s trip to TIME magazine was incredible.  I always dreamed of something like that and it seemed so simple with Parsons to get there and to be welcomed.  The feeling I got there was just great.  I learned about different types of photography and how it […]

Scholar’s Responses to Chelsea Galleries Visit

The best part of the trip was when we went to Jonathan Levine Gallery to look at Natalia Fabias’ work, which was awesome.  I mean amazing.  Her works were very inspiring.  I wish to become a painter like her.  Her paintings are so good they look like they’re photographs.  The stuff she paints is so realistic with  some glitter and rainbows.  She loves using lots of color which I love.  She reminds me of me because I also love fashion and the life she describes in her paintings.  I like to draw what I see mostly from a picture.  She inspires me to learn how to paint and become a pro.  In her paintings, the women are full of beauty. […]
